"October 6, was World Teachers' Day. It is regrettable that certain trade unions had organized a campaign of taking teachers to the streets and made them wear black bands on that day. In this way Sri Lanka has gone down on record as the only country which disgraced this noble profession on the day of honouring teachers in whose hands the knowledge and wisdom of the young generation rest." These observations were made by Education, Human Resources Development and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr.Karunasena Kodituwakku, when he addressed the Education Co-operative Bank's Scholarships Awards Ceremony for University students held at Royal College, Colombo, last Saturday. The Education Ministry, by now has taken a host of measures to solve the many problems confronting the entire Teachers' Service. The Cabinet has already approved the promotions and payment of arrears for 140,000 teachers before the end of this year. The Ministry has forwarded 9 Memoranda to the Cabinet, seeking relief for Teachers' grievances, stated Minister Kodituwakku. There are 10,000 teachers serving in Pirivenas and Assisted Schools who are only receiving a salary from the Government but who do not enjoy any other privilege and that steps have been taken to absorb them into the parallel Private School Teachers' or Pirivena Teachers' Service with due arrears from the date of establishing the Teachers' Service, he said. |
