Police central welfare centre opened

by Sarath Malalasekera

"The Welfare of the Police personnel is very important to ensure proper delivery of services to the public. Police officers must be free of problems associated with their families and themselves, IGP T.E. Anandarajah said after the ceremonial opening of the eight storey Police Central Welfare Centre at Ollcott Mawatha, Colombo on Saturday.

Police Central Welfare Centre DIG Sarath Kombalavithana and its director Senior SP Asoka Wijethilake received the IGP and escorted him to the venue.

Before the opening ceremony the IGP inspected the parade conducted by ASP U. K. Dissanayake held opposite the new complex.Senior DIGs Gamini Randeni, Indra de Silva and Bodhi Liyanage, DIGs, Senior SPs, SPs, ASPs and several other police personnel were present at the ceremony.

''I have a strong notion that this centre will, to a great extent, relieve some of the problems that may be confronted by police officers and families. I am surprised to see the progress made in the construction of this building within such a short period,' the IGP said.

IGP Anandarajah said that 'in fact, I am quite aware that this concept was generated by Management Development and Welfare DIG Sarath Kombalavithana and was ably supported by Director Asoka Wijethilake. They have realised the importance of this project with determination and have intelligently utilized the funds in the CWC Benefit Scheme for this purpose.

This new complex has provided numerous facilities for the benefit of police personnel and their families such as facilities for computer studies, a language laboratory, seminar room, welfare shop, counselling room together with office rooms and general office areas.

'We should uphold that this centre belongs to all police officers and therefore take good care of it. We must protect it from vandalism and take every effort to maintain its splendour,' the IGP added.

"It is my sincere hope that this institution will not only be the 'Centre' for police welfare but also the 'tower' of strength for all welfare activities in the Sri Lanka Police Force," the IGP said.

IGP Anandarajah unveiled a portrait of Inspector V. K. Kandiyah, the Police officer who established the Centre Welfare Benefit Scheme in 1974.

DIG Sarath Kombalavithana said that 'Our vision is to value all members in the Force, represent their interest and concerns, promote their general welfare and contentment. Our mission is to promote welfare and support for members, enabling them to provide an efficient and effective service to the community.

Senior SP Asoka Wijethilake delivered the vote of thanks.
