| JVP condemns Armed Forces' role in health strike by Rashomi Silva The JVP yesterday condemned the role of the Armed Forces in the recent health strike as unethical, which according the party amounted to the undermining of the workers' struggle. JVP propaganda secretary Wimal Weerawansa made these remarks at a question and answer session that followed a JVP media briefing in Colombo. "JVP Member of Parliament and trade unionist Lal Kantha requested the Armed Forces not to sabotage the trade union action by assisting the health authorities, but the media gave distorted versions of their own," he said. "It was the JVP which stood by the Armed Forces and defended them when the government blamed its own forces and the Eastern Naval commander for carrying its duties," Weerawansa said. Speaking on the UNF government's foreign policies, he said the strong pro-US foreign policies adopted by the government is bound to alienate Sri Lanka in global politics. "The speech made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the United Nations General Assembly, justified the unlawful US led invasion in Iraq, much to the wrath of the Muslim and Arab world. The pro-Western stance of the Sri Lankan Trade Minister at the CanCun assembly is bound to alienate Sri Lanka from the rest of the developing countries," he said. Commenting on Prime Minister Wickremesinghe's invitation to the Portugal Prime Minister to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Portuguese invasion of Sri Lanka, Weerawansa said it was ridiculous that the Government was going to celebrate an anniversary marking the conquest of the country whereas what deserves to be celebrated was the release from the colonial bondage. Weerawansa also accused the media of bring bias towards the government in reporting political developments and urged reporters to honour the basic ethics of journalism. |
