Rains wreak havoc in Galle

The heavy rains in the Galle District since Tuesday have caused three landslides killing one person and injuring eight. Five persons are reported missing.

A landslide in Kudagala area off Elpitiya killed one person. In Wadiyawatta in the Yakkalamulla area out of the seven persons washed away by floods two were rescued. Navy divers are engaged in rescue and search operations. Two landslides were also reported in Elpitiya and Ruwangiriya.

Prisoner shot in escape bid

A prisoner was shot and wounded by a prison guard when he tried to escape near the Negombo Magistrate's Court yesterday evening.

The escape bid was made when prisoners were being taken to the prison van after being produced in Court.

The victim was removed to the Negombo Base Hospital following the incident. Investigations are on.
