Nataraja idol for UNESCO headquarters

Lord Nataraja idol for UNESCO headquarters at Paris from Swamimalai. A five-foot sculpture of Lord Nataraja made of panchalolkha sculpted by the Sthapathis, Radhakrishnan Sthapathy, Srikandan Sthapathy and Swaminathan Sthapathy at Swamimalai is to be shipped to Paris within a couple of days for installation at the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) headquarters in the metropolis.

The exquisite piece of art will be installed at the main building of the UNESCO along with two other sculptress one of Lord Buddha and another of Mahatma Gandhi both sculptures in Gujarat - and unveiled on the 2nd next month on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi.

Speaking to the press persons at their workshop in Swamimalai (named after then father Sri Devasenapathi Sthapathy, National Awardee) today, the brothers said that the World Peace Centre at Pune (which has sponsored and the borne the whole cost) initially approached them for all the three pieces but they could accept only one so as to be able to do full justice to the work within the given time of barely three months.

They said, while the sculpture of Lord Nataraja depicted Indian art and culture (Bharathanatya) and the philosophy of cosmic dance (creation and destruction), that of Buddha and Gandhi depicted peace and non-violence to the world community.

Explaining the style adopted, they said the historical Chola traditions have been adopted, combining the best of the three well-known Nataraja idols - found at the big temple (Thanjavur), Konerirajapuram temple and the Thiruvangadu temple.

For the 'Kona' (angle) they have adopted the style of Chidambaram Natarajar which is angled like in Srichakra, the Thanjavur and Konerirajapuram models are six angled). The hairstyle adopted is after the Thiruvangadu model. The sculpture weighing nearly 250 kgs and worth Rs. 2.5 lakhs (INR) is mounted on a teak pedestal 1 foot high.

The sculptors said, they have put their full artistic ability on the work.
