Mixed performance for consumer prices in September

Consumer prices in September recorded a mixed performance, with upward revision of the prices of fuel and cigarettes, while food prices fell, on average, over the previous month due to the improvement in the supply of many consumer items including rice. Meanwhile annual average inflation declined further says the Central Bank in a press release.

The Colombo District Consumer Price Index (CDCPI), computed by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, of the lowest 40 per cent of income earning households, covering the Colombo District, decreased by 0.4 per cent in September. The point to point increase of the index was 0.5 per cent, lower than 1.2 per cent in August.

The annual average change of the index dropped further to 3.1 per cent compared to 3.5 per cent last month, the release said.

The Colombo Consumers' Price Index (CCPI), the official measure of price changes within the Colombo Municipality for the lowest 40 per cent of income groups published by the Government Department of Census and Statistics, registered 3302.3 in September, indicating a marginal increase of 0.3 per cent over the previous month.

The Food category, which has the highest weight, was the main contributory factor for the decrease in the CDCPI in September. Prices of most varieties of fruits, big onion, potatoes, most varieties of fish, some varieties of vegetables and leafy vegetables, certain condiment and pulses and rice dropped during the month. Prices of most varieties of vegetables, some varieties of condiment including lime, red onion and green chillies, eggs, coconut, certain prepared food items, a few varieties of fruits and leafy vegetables, manioc and beef registered price increases during the month.

In the CDCPI, the Fuel and Light sub index increased by 1.3 per cent due to the upward revision of the administered price of kerosene and the increase in the prices of LP gas. Further, as a result of upward revision of the administered price of cigarettes, the Liquor, Tobacco, Betel and Arecanut sub index went up by 2.5 per cent.
