Over 11,000 teachers for Sri Lanka Teachers' Service by Manjula Fernando Over 11,000 teachers in non-fee levying private schools and pirivenas will be integrated in the Sri Lanka Teachers, Service, fulfilling a long standing demand of the trade unions. "These teachers will receive a considerable pay hike as a result of this transfer," a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday. According to the spokesman these teachers were overlooked when the Teachers' Service was established in 1995 elevating the salary scales of government teachers substantially and they had been lamenting over the issue. Education Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku submitted a Cabinet paper to include private school and Pirivena teachers in the service, to rectify this omission on the part of the authorities during the previous regime who established the service eight years ago. The Cabinet paper will bring in new provisions to permit private school and pirivena teachers to enjoy the same benefits as the teachers of government schools. A spokesman for the Education Ministry said that they were confident the paper would be approved without delay. |
