Clash at Colombo Campus :

No disciplinary action, say authorities

by Manjula Fernando

Colombo University authorities have decided not to take disciplinary action against students behind Tuesday's clash despite protests by Law Faculty Student Union members that action should be taken to expel those behind the incident.

Vice Chancellor Tilak Hettiarachchi at a meeting with student members last morning said clashes were common when student union elections were getting closer. He said police will take action against the culprits behind the clash according to the country's civil law.

Meanwhile, Cinnamon Garden Police patrolled near the Arts Faculty yesterday. Fifteen Colombo University undergraduates were arrested by Cinnamon Garden police on Tuesday following violent clashes between Law Faculty Student Union members and pro-JVP students of the Arts Faculty.

The Law Faculty Student Union members alleged that armed pro-JVP Arts Faculty students stormed their faculty and assaulted their members.

They claimed these students had links with the Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) amidst denials by the IUSF of any involvement.
