Dad, son held in drug haul

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

The Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) and the Police seized another haul of drugs weighing 1.5kgs valued at Rs. 2.6 million together with Rs. 456,210 from Navagampura, Kelanitissa yesterday.

"Within two days, the PNB and Police arrested six drug dealers and seized narcotics worth nearly Rs. 8.1 million and over Rs. 1 million in cash," PNB Director SSP Pujitha Jayasundara told the Daily News yesterday.

PNB also took into custody a 0.22mm automatic pistol and 53 bullets of five varieties including 0.22mm, 0.54mm, 0.75mm, 38 special and T56 from one of the suspect's possession. The PNB suspects the accused may be in possession of several other weapons.

The two suspects taken into custody yesterday include a father and son. The latter is alleged to have links with the billionaire drug lord behind the Mulleriyawa drug detection on Monday.

The detection was made on a tip-off that the drugs were taken by the youth to a hide-out at the father's residence. Officers in civvies who arrested the youth found the heroin and the weapon.

The PNB searched the father's residence and found nothing suspicious. The youth is also alleged to be behind three robberies in Modera and Kotahena, the SSP added.

Asked if any police officers are behind drug trafficking in the Colombo city and suburbs, the SSP said that the allegation by certain media is incorrect. The investigations revealed the involvement of only an Inspector, the SSP said.
