Mazenodians bag Lemonade sixes title

De Mazenod College Kandana created a major upset as they beat the more fancied St. Joseph's College team in the Old Wesleyites Sports Club inter schools Elephant Lemonade Cup six a side cricket tournament final played at Campbell Park yesterday.

De Mazenod College put up a fine performance on the field to restrict the Josephians to 50 for 4 and then reached their target scoring 52 for 2 with two balls to spare. Tharindu Ariyawansa top scored for St. Joseph's with an unbeaten knock of 38 runs. Malith Wijethunga led the run chase for De Mazenod with an unbeaten knock of 29 from only 17 balls.

Kasun Fernando and Dileepa Marlon both from De Mazenod College won the Man of the Final award and the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament award respectively while Thereinto Errancy of S. Joseph's College was named best batsman of the tournament. In addition Whistled Antra Camera was selected as the best bowler and Thiamin Cecil Selva took the best fielders award.

Earlier in the semifinals S. Joseph's completely outplayed D. S. Senanayake by 49 runs while De Mazenod College Kandana upset S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia by one wicket. De Mazenod College successfully chased the Thomian score of 54 runs and reached their target with a couple of deliveries to spare.

In contrast the Josephians won their semifinal match quite easily following a tremendous batting performance from Sandun Dias and Tharindu Ariyawansa. The pair launched a severe assault on the D. S. Senanayake bowling and collected an imposing 96 runs from their allotted five overs. In reply D. S. Senanayake never looked like making a match of it and managed to score only 47 for four wickets.
