LTTE to allow more freeedom of movement to SLMM by Ranil Wijayapala The LTTE yesterday assured the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission that they would take steps to enhance the freedom of movement of the truce monitors in LTTE controlled areas. The LTTE has given this assurance to the SLMM after the district heads of the SLMM raised the issue with the LTTE political wing leaders headed by S.P. Thamilselvan at their meeting in Kilinochchi yesterday. The district heads of the SLMM has brought this matter up as one of the burning issues as they were frequently denied access to some LTTE controlled areas recently. SLMM Spokeswoman Agnes Bragadottir told the Daily News yesterday the SLMM Chief, District Head of Missions had a 'positive and constructive' meeting with the LTTE Political Wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan and all Political Wing leaders to have improved cooperation between the two parties. The SLMM Chief has also raised this issue with S.P. Thamilselvan as one of the burning issues at previous several meetings with him in Kilinochchi. According to Bragadottir, the LTTE's commitment taking steps towards assuring freedom of movement of the SLMM was most welcome, as this enables the truce monitors to engage in routine patrolling and random patrolling in certain areas in the North East. The SLMM heads from different district offices have raised this issue and the LTTE has said that they will look into the matter to improve the situation, Bragadottir added. The SLMM and the LTTE have also reportedly discussed the matter of hoisting the Eelam flag in public buildings in government controlled areas. However, the LTTE and the SLMM could not come to a common agreement on this issue and the SLMM has informed that the LTTE should resolve the matter after discussing this issue with the Police and the Security Forces. The SLMM has already given a ruling that hoisting of LTTE flag on public buildings in government controlled areas was a violation of Ceasefire Agreement. The meeting between the LTTE Politcal Wing leaders and heads of SLMM District offices led by SLMM Chief Tryggve Tellefsen lasted for more than three and a half hours. According to sources, the Wan Ela camp issue was not taken for discussion during this meeting. |
