An agreement to construct a fully fledged National Performing Arts Centre with Chinese aid was signed between the Governments of Sri Lanka and China, at the Cultural Ministry Auditorium on September 26. Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr.Karunasena Kodituwakku was present on the occasion. The Arts Centre, located at the Nomads Play-ground which is now vested in the Ministry of Cultural Affairs will consist of all facilities and equipment available under modern technology. It can accommodate 1,264 people. The relevant Agreement in this regard was signed by J. Fu, the Chief of the Research Unit of the Chinese Arts symposium, Beijing, China, on behalf of the Chinese Government and A.P.A. Gunasekera, Acting Director General of the Central Cultural Fund on behalf of Sri Lanka. The Chinese aid for the project is a sequel to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's recent visit to China. Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku were also involved in the negotiations. |
