Lanka's tea crop - up16% in August Tea production during the month of August 2003 totalled 24.1 m/kgs as against 20.7 m/kgs during the corresponding period last year an increase of 16.6% or 3.45 m/kgs. Majority of the increase was recorded from the High Grown elevation which realised an increase of 1.8 m/kgs year on year (46%) followed by Medium Grown, an increase of 1 m/kgs (32.6%) and Low Growns by 0.58 m/kgs (4.2%). Interestingly, this is the highest production for the month since 1998. With the significant increase in production during the month under review, the cumulative tea production totaled a 201.7 m/kgs as against 202.5 m/kgs during the corresponding period last year. Except for the Low Grown sector which recorded a decline of 2.7 m/kgs both High Growns and Medium Growns have recorded increases during the cumulative period this year. Although at a half yearly evaluation it appeared as though the record crop achieved last year would not be a reality, it now seems to be an achievable target. |
