The overall Championship of the 17th Mahaweli Sports Festival held at Mahaweli Stadium, Embilipitiya was bagged by "Uda Walawa Zone" Team who won 10 gold medals, seven silvers and one bronze, while "Ihala Mahaweli Zone" Team became runner up with 9 golds, two silvers and five bronze medals.

The track and field men and women championships went to "B Zone" team, who also became the overall runner-up winning eight golds, eight silvers and eight bronze medals. At this Sports Festival which lasted two days, Gayan Samira Dissanayake of "B Zone" who won the triple jump in 15m.21 was adjudged the best men athlete while Weemal Chandrani who won the 1500 metres event in 4m.35sec.to create a new record was declared the best women athlete.

The 17th Mahaweli Sports Festival, initiated by the late Land Development and Mahaweli Minister Gamini Dissanayake in the year 1986, saw approximately 1000 contestants participating.

Water Management Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, Irrigation Minister H.G.P. Nelson, Fishery and Aquatic Resources Minister V.A.H.H. Azwer, Tea Small Holders Development Minister Susantha Punchilame and Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Saliya Mohan Ellawala were the among the distinguished invitees.
