On the initiative of President Sumathipala :

Cricket Australia helps SLC make Rs.80m more

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will make an additional income of USD 800,000 (nearly Rs. 80 million) after they convinced Cricket Australia to play two additional one-day internationals next year.

Australian team was originally due to make a full tour of Sri Lanka early next year to play Three Tests and an equal number of one-day internationals.

President of the SLC, Thilanga Sumathipala has successfully negotiated with the Australian cricket officials to expand the three-match one day international series to be a five-match affair, the first between the two teams here. Secretary of the SLC Mohan de Silva said the idea was mooted by Sumathipala to find additional revenue for the Board.

"It was originally a three-match one-day series. When we requested Australian team to play two additional games, they wanted to do so at the expense of a Test match. But we were not willing to go back on the original Three-Test series.

We presented our case to the Cricket Australia and they agreed to help us out with two extra games," De Silva said. He said each of the two additional one-day internationals would give an extra income of USD 400,000 each from television rights. Sri Lanka Cricket is yet to call for tenders and finalise its television rights for next year's home series against Australia, which is expected to generate an income of over USD three million.

The SLC has already signed Sharjah-based Taj Television to cover the forthcoming home series against England on Ten Sports on a USD two million deal. (D.W.)
