Anura barred from attending media conference

Following a decision by the PA leadership, PA MP Anura Bandaranaike was prevented from attending the media conference convened by the Desha Hithaishee Jathika Vyaparaya on September 24, internal political sources said yesterday.

Bandaranaike who received invitation for the conference has on two occasions sought PA leader President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's permission to attend it. She had informed him of the Party decision.

MEP MP Dinesh Gunawardena whom the convenors' media announcement alleged to have been invited did not attend the conference due to party pressure, the sources added.

Colombo District MP Arjuna Ranatunga was present at the conference in defiance of the party decision.

According to the same sources, Ranatunga's participation, in defiance of the President's order, has received much contempt among certain members of the PA in view of the PA's understanding that what is going on in the name of the Desha Hithaishee Jathika Vyaparaya is nothing but the programme of the JVP.
