Nuwara Eliya Mayor donates 20 schols Nuwara Eliya group correspondent Mayor of Nuwara Eliya Chandana Karunaratne awarded twenty Scholarships among needy children belonging to different communities at a ceremony held at the New Town Hall here. These amounts which accrued from his two years salaries and other perks, and the Mayor announced his desire to utilise it for a good purpose, on the day he assumed duties as Mayor two years ago. He further announced that he will not use any of the council's vehicles for his official work and he continues keep these two promises todate. According to Mayor Chandana Karunaratne's scheme each beneficiary will receive Rs. 500 per month or Rs. 6000 per year for a period of two years, till the child completes his or her GCE (A/L). The scholarship awarding function was attended by parents, well-wishers, Government Agent of Nuwara Eliya Mrs. Udugampola, officials of the Department of Education, Members of the Municipal Council, other distinguished visitors and members of the clergy. The Lady Government Agent P. Udugampola in a short speech said this magnanimous and worthy cause of accomplishment by the young Mayor should be an example to the rest of the country, specially those who could afford such a human gesture. The members of the clergy applauded the mayor and urged the twenty beneficiaries to emerge as men and women as worthy citizens of the area and the country in general. Mayor Chandana Karunaratne in his address said it was his desire and ambition to develop both the city and its people to the best of his capabilities. He said whether he completes his tenure of his mayorality, he hopes to continue this scheme with additional scholarships. |
