Udatalawinna massacre
:

 Deputy Govt. analyst testifies further

by Sandasen Marasinghe

It is possible that the deformed bullets, bullet cores and pieces of metal found at the site of the massacre and produced before the court were parts of cartridges used by the five T-56-2 rifles produced before the court earlier since they are of the calibre 7.62 x 39 mm, said the Deputy Government Analyst W. D. Gamini Sarath Gunatilake testifying before the Trial-at-Bar hearing the Udatalawinna massacre yesterday.

The Trial-at-Bar comprised High Court Judges Eric Basnayake (President), Deepali Wijesundara, and Sunil Rajapakse.

Examined by Additional Solicitor General Palitha Fernando, the Deputy Government Analyst submitted that he examined a deformed bullet and a small piece of metal, recovered from the site of the massacre, in the parcel that he was sent by the Teldeniya Magistrate with the letter dated 21, December 2001.

After scrutinising he observed that the deformed bullet resembled a bullet of a live cartridge of the calibre 7.62 x 39 mm produced in a factory. The piece of metal was also identified as a piece of jacket of a bullet core produced in a factory.

Another parcel sent to the witness by Teldeniya Magistrate contained five deformed bullets and a piece of metal also recovered at the scene. The deformed bullets resembled in size and shape to the bullets of calibre 7.62 x 39 mm produced in a factory and the metal piece to a jacket of a bullet core.

The Deputy Government Analyst further stated that another parcel contained a deformed bullet and a bullet core. The deformed bullets resembled to the bullets of calibre 7.62 x 39 mm produced in a factory. The bullet core he examined also resembled to a core of bullet of calibre 7.62 x 39 mm. He scrutinized another bullet core contained in yet another parcel and observed that it was also a bullet of calibre 7.62 x 39 mm.

Additional Solicitor General:- Can those deformed bullets, cores and pieces of jacket cores be the parts of the cartridges used by the five T-56-2 rifle firearms produced before the court.

The Deputy Government Analyst :-Those T-56-2 rifle firearms being the weapons of calibre 7.62 x 39 mm it is possible.

The prosecution produced the aforesaid deformed bullets, bullet cores and pieces before the court as production and the Deputy Government Analyst W. D. G. S. Gunatilake recognised them.

Further hearings resume today (25).
