Jaffna needs lab for quality control of goods

Jaffna Special correspondent

"Jaffna has become the dumping ground of unsalable and past dated commodities. There is no check on the quality of goods brought from the south or on the fixation of prices.

As there is no quality control the traders get down for sale goods of inferior quality and make huge profits. What is urgently needed in Jaffna is a laboratory to test the quality control goods put for sale," said M. Ramathasan President Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Yarlpanam at a press conference held in the conference hall of the Chamber of Commerce in Nallur.

Ramathasan further said that the Chamber of Commerce has drawn up plans to help the small as well as the big industrialists in Jaffna.

The development of our natural resources would give ready employment to many youth. The brain drain could be arrested by opening new avenues in the agricultural and industrial fields.

He said that the people of Jaffna are well known for their saving habit. The savings of the people are mostly deposited in the banks. But these savings are not put to the development of the Jaffna district. The loan facilities given by commercial and state banks are not extended to the industrialists in the North. The National Development Bank has not been set up in the North. The farmers, industrialists, fishermen and dairy farmers have not had the glimpse of modern industrial or agricultural machineries. There are rich potentials of sea that could be utilised to earn foreign exchange.

He lamented that industrial technology has not made a notable impact in Jaffna. The Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Yarlpanam has planned to give training to apprentices in industrial workshops.

He pointed out that we have been alienated from the open market policy. Interaction between the Northern and Southern traders is vital to encourage an investment environment. Lobbying is another factor that would facilitate the support for industrial partnership and rehabilitation.
