Saudi Arabia to invest in providing telephones for rural Lanka

The Saudi Arabia Government and Saudi investors are keen to invest in providing telephones for rural areas and several other areas in Sri Lanka using the state of art technology.

Special attention has been drawn by the Trade Council and Institute of Information Technology of Saudi Arabia in this connection. The Saudi Government hopes to implement projects for the same purpose.

This was the outcome of the meeting of Minister of Mass Communication, Imthiaz Bakeer Markar and Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology in Saudi, Mohommed Jameer Abdullah recently.

Minister Markar headed a five-day official visit and met the Deputy Minister of Finance and Administration of the Saudi Government Abdul Razak Abubakar.

Minister Markar expressing his views said that after two decades of war a peaceful environment has been restored and the government has been taken measures to strengthen the economy of the country and regularise the development activities in Sri Lanka.

He also pointed out that the government of Saudi Arabia has investment opportunities to assist Sri Lanka for development activities, in such occasion of extending the assistance by foreign countries and international organisations resulting from the peaceful atmosphere in the country.

The Minister pointed out that a massive development in the communication sector of Sri Lanka has taken place and further stated that it is essential to provide the telephone facilities which are limited to the urban areas to rural areas of Sri Lanka where the Saudi Arabian Government and the investors have the possibility of giving assistance. The Minister of Telecommunication and Information Technology Development of Saudi Arabia said their Government and the investors would take action to implement suitable projects by utilising assistance of the Trade Council.

The two Ministers discussed how the Saudi Arabian Government could help for the promotion of electronic technologies and telecommunication services of Sri Lanka.

Subsequent to this discussion, Minister Markar and the delegation visited the Headquarters of the "Saudi Telecom Institute" which has a staff of 12,000. The Sri Lankan delegation observed the telephone services which are carried out utilising modern telecommunication networks of the world.

Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Communication, Kumar Abeysinghe, Sri Lankan Ambassador of Saudi Arabia, I. Ansar, Director General of Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka Themiya Hurulle and Deputy Chairman of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Mukthar Marikkar, accompanied the Minister.
