Talks to identify location for second int'l airport by Shirajiv Sirimane Discussions were held last Friday in Kandy to identify a location to construct the second international airport at Dambulla. A meeting in this regard was held in Kandy which was attended by the Central Region Economic Development Committee (CRED) Chairman Dr. Lalith Kotalawela, Director D. G. Munasinghe and Aviation Ministry officials. According to Munasinghe the parties studied a proposal to construct an international airport in Dambulla mainly due to its vast tourist potential with the heart of the Cultural Triangle being in the area. "We also selected this location since there is an International Cricket stadium and the area has great potential to produce export quality vegetables." He said that exporters have received many complaints that the freshness in the vegetables are not there. "With this proposed airport this problem can be overcome easily." He said that in addition to this proposal, plans are also under way to construct a domestic airport in Kandy. We are hoping to construct this airport at Pallekele. |
