Arms changing hands for just Rs.3000 by Asanga Warnakulasuriya A locally made shot gun capable of firing T56 bullets changes hands in the underworld for as little as Rs.3000, with more sophisticated and well designed guns going for just Rs 2,000 more. This news would bring a smile to underworld criminals but will definitely raise alarm bells among the peace loving public and the Police who are determined to keep crime rates down. These prices were revealed to the police when they sent a decoy to buy weapons from the underworld weapons network in Matale yesterday. Acting on a tip-off that locally made weapons are on sale in Matale, Pathingolla and Kirimatiyana, Ranbodagalla OIC Inspector Chandrasena Bandara first sent a worker to Matale with Rs.3000 to buy a weapon. The worker who returned with a shotgun informed the OIC that more shotguns were on sale including a more advanced version for just Rs.5000. The OIC had again instructed the worker to buy the stylish shotgun. The worker who returned with the shotgun had told the OIC that the weapons dealers sensed his involvement with the police. Police later raided the shotgun 'factory' inside a cave at Rambodagalla, Kurunegala and took three suspects to custody along with four weapons. |
