Three killed in landmine blast by Maoists in east India RANCHI, India, Sunday (AFP) Three people including a policeman were killed when suspected leftist extremists set off a landmine in eastern India where the former state leader was about to address a public meeting, police said Sunday. Babu Lal Marandi, a former chief minister of Jharkhand state, was due to attend the rally in Giridih district on Saturday afternoon when a vehicle of his advance security was blown up by the banned People's War Group, a police official said. A securityman and two people waiting to attend the rally were killed on the spot, police said. Marandi is also a senior figure in Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's BJP party, serving as a national vice president. He has been on the hit-list of the People's War Group and other far left groups for launching a crackdown on extremists a year ago. The People's War Group, which exerts de facto rule in stretches of Jharkhand and neighbouring Bihar state, has been fighting for years against what it calls exploitation of landless farmers. |
