Bomb kills Bangladesh opposition leader KHULNA, Bangladesh, Sunday (Reuters) An opposition leader was killed and at least 10 people were wounded when unidentified attackers hurled a bomb at them in Bangladesh's southern Khulna city on Saturday night, police and witnesses said. Kamrul Islam Kutu, a local leader of the main opposition Awami League, had been talking to a group of people outside the party office when the attack occurred, witnesses said. Police said no one had claimed responsibility."We still have no clue to who were the culprits," one police officer said. Local reporters said six of the wounded were in a critical condition. A senior Awami Leader, Manjurul Imam, and two others were shot dead by militants from an underground extremist group in Khulna on August 25. The Awami League, headed by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has staged countrywide protests and called for a national strike on September 25 over what it says are "pre-planned murders of opposition leaders and activists" by the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The BNP has rejected the allegation. Hasina lost power to BNP leader Begum Khaleda Zia in a 2001 election which local and foreign monitors said was fair and mostly peaceful. |
