by Richard Dwight

The 17th Mahaweli Games to be held at Embilipitiya on the 13th and 14th of September - has proved through the years, that this major undertaking is worthy of public support. Mainly because, that apart from the competitions drawing athletes from the 8 Mahaweli systems and yet others - it also serves to be associated with the upliftment of the young and the raising of standards.

By organizing and conducting training programmes, seminars, workshops and clinics, that are of relevance to school leavers and those on the verge of leaving, who live in the areas where these games are annually conducted. In recognition and in appreciation of this, quite a few sponsors have rallied round to assist this deserving cause.

They are Lanka Cement, Singer, Rupavahini, National Lotteries Board, Highland, Prima, Ceylinco, Agro Industries, United Motors, Tea Board and Bank of Ceylon. The accredited representatives of these firms were present at a felicitation held at the Mahaweli Authority last Friday, where they pledged support in a tangible manner to the Director General Mahaweli Authority, P. T. Senaratne, who earlier made the address of welcome.

The consultant for Women's Development to the Mahaweli Authority (MA), Shanthini Kongahage, said that these Games have brought about long term benefits to the children of farmers and of other small industrialists, working in the rural areas. She emphasised, that the MA has no funds of its own for such events, but the Games cannot be stopped due to lack of funds, but must be carried on for the good of the children, who experience deprivation in form or other. And it was in this regard, that she was extremely thankful to the sponsors for their help. Shanthini, was also appreciative of the patronage given by the Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management, Gamini Jayawickreme Perera, H. P. Nelson and Chandrasekere, for their encouragement and support at all time. She did not fail to mention that the girls have gathered much through the conducted English classes and, are doing well, as well mannered, disciplined members of the hospital trade.

The consultant to Minister Jayawickreme Perera, D. B. Jayasuriya, said that concept of this annual event, is to ensure that sports moves along with equipping the young, to take his/her place in the community, as responsible citizens through programme in the upgrading of the varied skills, entrepreneurship, career guidance and also to be involved in social projects of the area. Officers of Lanka Sportreizen who were present, spoke on the exhibitions that would be carried out on the nearby running stream, in Windsurfing, Water Skiing, and Jet Skiing.
