Chilaw Marians beat SSC to take U-23 title

by Chris Dhambarage

Chilaw Marians Sports Club clinched the BCCSL under 23 division one cricket title when they defeated SSC on the first innings in the final concluded at the NCC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.

Chilaw Marians SC after piling up 342 for 9 in their first innings put up an equally good performance on the field to bundle out the formidable SSC batting line up for only 201 runs. SSC never looked like overtaking their opponents as they lost wickets at regular intervals against some accurate bowling.

Chilaw Marians SC were right on top of the game from the very start and the only concern for them was the bad weather which was threatening to spoil their chances. In fact the entire first session of the second days play was washed out due to rain as SSC ended up at 37 for 2 on Saturday. But the weather kept away on the important final day and Chilaw Marians SC picked up wickets at regular intervals through some penetrative bowling.

SSC in their run chase suffered an early setback losing the in form Jeewan Mendis after he had added just two runs to his overnight score. Tharanga Paranavithana, Lasith Fernando and Malin Silva all made good starts but failed to build up a long innings. The only noteworthy contribution for SSC came from Damith Indika who completed a fluent half century while batting under tremendous pressure.

Damith Indika and Dhammika Prasad brought some respectability into SSC's total with a seventh wicket partnership of 61 runs. Damith Indika's kncok of 51 included seven boundaries. But by that time SSC had already lost the game with only the tailenders to come in. Chilaw Marians SC rallied around through their spin duo of Ranil Dhammika and Omesh Wijesiriwardena with the pair sharing six wckets between them.

Paceman Manoj Chanaka provided excellent support with 2 for 50 while Tharanga Lakshitha and Praneeth Jayasundera captured a wicket each. Chilaw Marians SC batting the second time reached 73 for 2 from 25 overs with first innings hero Malintha Gajanayake stroking an unbeaten 31. In fact Gajanayake who hit a top score of 90 runs in the first innings was selected as the best batsman and man of the match. Janaka Gunaratne also from Chilaw Marians SC was named man of the tournament.

Chilaw Marians SC: 342 for 9 decl and 73 for 2 (Malintha Gajanayake 31 n.o, Arosha Perera 14, Sahan Wijeratne 17 n.o)

SSC (overnight 37 for 2): 201 (Tharanga Paranavithana 35, Jeevan Mendis 23, Lasith Fernando 24, Damith Indika 51, Malin Silva 21, Dhammika Prasad 22, Ranil Dhammika 3 for 15, Omesh Wijesiriwardena 3 for 42, Manoj Chanaka 2 for 50).

Test cap Russell Arnold hit a superb 147 off 140 balls with three sixes and 17 fours as Old Peterites defeated Old Joes by 67 runs in their Saints Quadrangular limited overs cricket tournament final played at Darley Road yesterday.

Arnold also bagged the best batsman's award and the man of the match award while Kaushal Lokuarachchi was named best bowler and Charinda Fernando was selected as the best fielder.

Old Peterites: 283 for 9 in 50 overs (Russell Arnold 147, Kaushal Lokuarachchi 53, Ranga Dias 34, Mark Fernando 3 for 35, Dilshan Perumal 3 for 64).
