Rohan moves into final In the semi-final clash at the 88th National tennis championships, sponsored by F and G Property Developers and Fingara Club, on Sunday two veterans and fellow Davis Cup team mates Rohan de Silva and Rajiv Rajapakse were pitted against each other. In the first set Rajiv was all over Rohan moving him from side to side trying to exploit the De Silva back hand. But Rohan hung in the match, and in a crucial game, at 2 all broke the Rajapakse serve Rajiv had his chances to break back at in the very next game when he had break points, but could not finish the point it. This only added to his frustration as he lost his serve for the second time along with the set 6/3. The loss of the first set doing with the double break of serve seemed to knock the wind out of Rajiv's sails, he started the second set off miserably losing his serve and Rohan totally capitalised taking the match under his control to take the second set and match 6/0. It was amazing display by Rohan who rolled back the years to show the kind of form that brought him two previous National crowns in 1990 and 1993. He's back court play was truly fantastic as he responded with gentle finesse with his back-hand passing shots every time Rajiv attempted to force the shot at the net. Rohan awaits the winner of the Franklin Emmainuel Oshada Wijemana tie scheduled to be played late Sunday evening in the rain plagued tournament. Earlier in the day Wijemana had it easy in his quarter-final when he beat D. Mayadunne 6/2, 6/1. |
