Last minute try helps Isipathana take Sevens title

Isipathana College with a try in the final minute of play outwitted Kingswood College 5 points (1 try) to nil to lift the Schools Cup Championship of the schools sevens rugby tournament of Singer- SriLankan Airlines in the final played at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy yesterday. At half-time there was no scoring.

After a scoreless first half during which a bitter struggle was witnessed, the Pathans scored their winning try through centre Senthil Kumar in the final minute of play. At that point the Kingswoodians had only six players on the field as their star player and main cover defender Achala Perera was sent to 'Sin Bin' for punching an opposing player, by referee Taiso Hirabayso. In the first half too Kingswood played for some time with six players as full-back Erande Weerakkody was sent on 'Sin Bin' for dangerous tackling. Chairman of Singer Sri Lanka Ltd Hemaka Amarasuriya presented the award to the cup champions Issipathana MV.

H. S. Fernando of St. Thomas College, Mount Lavinia was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the schools tournament and he received his award from James Scott. Secretary General of the Asian Rugby Football Union.

In the Schools Cup quarter-final after trailing behind 0-5 at half-time. Issipathana MV did well to beat St. Peter's College 7-5 in a hard fought game. Wesley did well to overcome Trinity college by 26 points (3 goals, 1 try) to 17 (1 goal, 2 tries). The third cup quarter-final between Ananda College and Kingswood College produced sparkling rugby.

The Anandians were leading 19-17 till the final minute when the Kingswoodians won a scrum and moved the ball with all 7 players handling the ball before full-back Eranda Weerakkoddy planted the winning try and goaled it himself for the Kingswoodians to win 24-19. In the last quarter-final S. Thomas College beat St. Anthony's College 35 (5 goals) to 24 (2 goals).

In the Cup semi-finals Wesley College after a flattering start when they ran up a 12-0 lead in the first four minutes faltered to go down 12-20 to Issipathana MV. Tyronne Harrison scored both tries for Wesley while Issipathana scored through Amila Udyangana (2 tries), Anuradha Dharmaratne (1 try), and Lasitha Kaushalya (1 try).

In the second schools cup final Kingswood College had an easy passage into the finals beating S. Thomas College Mount Lavinia 24 points (2 goals, 2 tries) to 7 (1 goal) after leading 5-0 at the breather.

Achala Perera opened the scoring for Kingswood and this was followed by tries through Dinesh Siriwimala, Vinod Bandara and Erande Weerakkody who also goalled two of the tries. For S. Thomas College Namal Rajapakse scored and this was goalled by M. Thajudeen.

Royal College won the Plate Championship drubbing Vidyartha College 34 points (2 goals, 4 tries) to 7 (1 goal). At the breather Royal led 10-7.

P. Udugampola led the Royal victory with two scintillating tries with S. Bahudeen, skipper Rajith Jayasundera, A. Rasheed and V. Wijewardena chipping in with a try each with S. Badhudeen goalling two of the tries. For Vidyartha Kamal Liyanage scored the solitary try with S. Pushpakumara adding the extra points.

Dharmaraja College after going through a nightmarish season during which they lost all their matches, had the consolation of winning the Bowl Championship beating Ruhunu Development 26 points (3 goals, 1 try) to 7 (1 goal). At half time Rajans led 7-0. Rajans scored tries through Asanka Rajakaruna (1), Rumesh Silva (1), Lasitha Udurawana (1) and Sameera Jayasundera (1), Rumesh Silva and Asanka Rajakaruna goaled a try each. For Ruhunu Development team L. H. Madu Mihiraj scored a try and did the convertion.

The trophy to Bowl Champion was awarded by Chandana de Silva (SriLankan Airlines) and to Plate Champions by Asitha Abeysekera (Marketing Director Singer Sri Lanka Ltd.).
