Sri Lanka winners of the Plate : Kenya goes with Singer-SriLankan Sevens Cup championship by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy sports correspondent Kenya lifted the Cup Championship while Sri Lanka won the Plate Championship at the 5th Singer-SriLankan International Rugby Sevens organised by Kandy Sports Club and sponsored by Singer Sri Lanka Ltd and SriLankan Airlines and co-sponsored by Connaissance de Ceylan Ltd with the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon as print media at the Bogambara Stadium yesterday. In the cup finals Keny with some hard running and athletic ruggerites beat the defending champions Portugal by 15 points (3 tries) to 12 (1 goal, 1 try). At half-time Kenya led 10-7. Strongly built Oscar Osir paved the way for the Kenyan victory with 2 brilliant tries while the third one was scored by Ben Nyambu. For Portugal, Antonio Kumha and Otogo Matews scored tries. Dilroy Fernando refereed. In the Plate finals Sri Lanka scored an easy 33 points (4 goals, 1 try) to 19 (2 goals, 1 try) win over Belgium. At half-time Sri Lanka led 7-0. Sri Lanka made their intentions clear from the kick-off when Pradeep Liyanage breezed his way to score under the post. This was followed by tries by Amjad Buksh, Prasad Chaturanga twice, and Dhanuskha Pushpakumara. Minister of Sports Johnston Fernando was the chief guest at the awards ceremony. Cook Islands was named the Most Popular International team and award was made by Chandra Wickramasinghe. The award to Bowl Champions was presented by Mohan Balasuriya and to the Plate Champions by Peter Hill (CEO, SriLankan Airlines). The Cup championship award was awarded by Minister Johnston Fernando. In the morning in the International Bowl Championship semi-final Arabian Gulf beat Singapore 24 points (2 goals, 2 tries) to 5 (1 try). At half-time the scores stood at 5-all. In the second Bowl semi-final Denmark got the better of Malaysia 19 points (2 goals, 1 try) to 12 (1 goal, 1 try). At half-time it was Malaysia who led 12-0 but failed to consolidate. In the Plate semi-final Belgium beat Morocco 10 points (2 tries) to 5 (1 try). The second Plate semi-finals saw a monopoly of play by the Kandy based ruggerites who helped Sri Lanka to score an emphatic 26 points (3 goals, 1 try) to 19 (2 goals, 1 try) win over Germany. At half time Germany led 19-7. It was a remarkable recovery by the Sri Lankan ruggerites who were trailing 0-19 at one stage in the first half. Within minutes of the kick off the Germans had run up a commanding 19-0 lead but the Sri Lankans never gave up. First Alexander Piper ran through a lose Sri lankan defence. Next Shen Smith scored under the post. Third try was planked by Timor Texal to put the Germans in the box seat. Sri Lanka's repairs to the damage first came in the form of a try by that nippy scrum half from St. Anthonys College Prasad Chathuranga who sliced through the defence to score under the post. Amjad Buksh added the extra point. Tries by Pradeep Liyanage (2). Radhika Hettiarachchi with Amjad Buksh goalling them saw Sri Lanka snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Cup quarter final saw New Zealand Centurian beat South Korea. 27 points (4 goals) to 7 (1 goal). In the second quarter-final defending champions Portugal drabbed Australian Polercos by 52 points (5 goals, 4 tries) to nil. In the third match Kenya beat Hong Kong by 36 points (3 goals, 3 tries) to 12 (1 goal, 1 try) after leading 22-0 at half time. In the fourth quarter-final Cook Islands beat Chinese Taipei 31 points (3 goals, 2 tries) to 15 (3 tries). At half time Cook Islands led 12-10. In cup semi-finals Portugal beat New Zealand Centurian 21 points (3 goals) to 12 (1 goal, 1 try). At half time Portugal led 14-7. In the second cup semi-final Kenya defeated Cook Islands by 43 points (4 goals, 3 tries) to 5 (1 try). At half time Kenya led 29-0. |
