Today the approach should be human-centred communication, giving priority to the human quality in all media activities. In modern society media professionals have a great responsibility for the progress of a nation. It can be stated, without any exaggeration, that media professionals determine the quality of a country's development,' Minister of Irrigation and Water Management, Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said. The Minister made this observation addressing a group of media trainees following a course in mass communication at the Mahaweli Centre. "What we describe as the progress of a nation is largely the blessing that comes about as a result of the wholesome performance of media professionals. This makes it essential to train our young people in media professions, considering it an activity of foremost national priority," the Minister said. The Minister said, "In today's world a marked discipline is essential to practise mass media professions. Totally contrary to the previous areas the media professionals of our time must possess a comprehensive grasp of technology, since the practitioner of Journalism today has to depend on a variety of technological equipment. In this context, the greatest challenge a media person faces today is the pursuit of his profession without being enslaved by technology. He must preserve his humanity and creativity while making the best possible use of technology." As part of the new concept of Minister Perera several courses of study in oriental dancing, computer training, English, Management, western music and Japanese Language are to be held at the Mahaweli Centre. Director Mahaweli Centre, Samson Kumarage, Kalakeerthi Edwin Ariyadasa, Consultant, Mahaweli Centre and Consultant Ministry of Irrigation and Water Management Premasara Epasinghe were also associated with the Minister. |
