"If there is no clear response from the Opposition by the end of this month there will be no option for the Government but to appoint its own members to chair the committees," Minister Prof G.L Peiris told the weekly Cabinet briefing yesterday. He said it would be unfortunate if the Opposition turns down the proposal by the Government aimed at giving a greater role to them in the committees. Referring to the appointment of MP Dinesh Gunawardene to chair the Select Committee on Electoral Reforms, the Minister said the Opposition took more than a month to express their consent on this proposal. "This committee has already started its sittings," he added. Prof Peiris said that the Government had already submitted nominees to constitute the Elections Commission established under the 17th amendment to the President for her approval. "These appointments should be made rapidly in view of the Provincial Council elections due to be held early next year." Meanwhile, the draft legislation to reactivate the Bribery or Corruption Commission which has ceased to function after the death of L. Abeyweera, one of the members, will soon be presented in Parliament as an urgent bill. |
