A record 4258 children of Lankan migrant workers will receive educational equipment including exercise books worth Rs. four million at a ceremony scheduled to be held in Galle on September 6 (tomorrow). Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe will attend the ceremony on the invitation of Galle District MP Gayantha Karunatillaka. "The objective of holding this annual programme which was initiated in 1997 from Hambantota District is to extend a helping hand to the needy children of migrant workers," Chairman, SLBFE Susantha Fernando told the Daily News. "It is our prime duty to serve the children of migrant workers in recognition to the service rendered by their kith and kin to improve the country's economy," he said. Under tomorrow's programme, 2000 children studying from Grade one to five will receive equipment to the value of Rs. 850 each while students in the GCE (OL) and (AL) classes will receive equipment to the value of Rs. 1750 each. Fernando said that similar programmes were conducted by the Bureau from 1997 in the districts of Moneragala, Ratnapura, Matale, Kegalle, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Puttalam, Kalutara, Trincomalee, Kandy, Matara and Hambantota. "This programme will be extended to other areas including the North and East for the benefit of a large number of children of migrant workers in the coming years." |
