The Legal Aid Foundation (LAF) of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) will celebrate the National Legal Aid Day and the 11th Anniversary of the establishment of the LAF on Monday, September 8 at the BASL Auditorium. Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva would be the Chief Guest. This year's National Legal Aid Day activities include holding of free Legal Aid Cliniques by Provincial Bar Associations in Jaffna, Batticaloa, Anuradhapura, Puttlam, Moneragala and Vavuniya on Friday, September 5. On September 6, Saturday, a Legal Aid Rally and a Clinique where over 20 Lawyers will participate will be held at Maharagama Urban Council premises. The Legal Aid Foundation, Chairman S.S. Wijeratne would be the Chief Guest and discussions on Elders Rights, Victims of Crime, Consumer Rights would be made by Senior Lawyers including M.T.S. Fernando and Hemantha Warnakulasuriya, former President of Colombo Magistrate's Courts Lawvers' Association. On September 7 Legal Aid Coordinators from North East, North Central provinces and Puttalam Districts would be participating in a Seminar at Hotel Taprobane to discuss strategies to improve access to justice to people in the war affected areas. The focal points of the Humanitarian Legal Literacy Programme from rest of the country would also participate in the Workshop. The main celebration on September 8, Monday would be addressed by Attorney General, K.C. Kamalasabayson P.C., BASL President Ananda Wijesekera P.C., Prof. Savithri Gunasekera, UNHCR Legal Advisor, Aurvasi Patel and Legal Aid Commissioner Upali A. Gunaratne. The celebrations would be moderated by LAF Chairman, S.S. Wijeratne, states a Legal Aid Foundation press release. |
