Eighteen young men and women leave for Canada

by Maharagama special correspondent, Vehelle Piyathilaka

Under the Canada-Sri Lanka Youth Exchange Programme 2003/2004 a contingent of 18 youths, 9 girls and 9 boys with two youth services officers as their leaders left Sri Lanka recently for a 3 1/2 months educational tour in Canada.

A simple ceremony was held at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to say goodbye to the youths and to hand over air tickets to them under the patronage of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Johnston Fernando.

Greeting the youths the Minister said: The population of the youths is 42% of the total population. You are the administrators, rulers and builders of the country tomorrow. We are in the vicinity of the global village all are longing for. You will be in Canada for 3 1/2 months. Learn the world to get into the global village with perfection.

You are like the Ambassadors of Sri Lanka in this tour. Forget not to make an awareness in the Canadian youth of the government's peace effort and urge them to visit Sri Lanka. That must be your mission.

In the past some youths who were sent abroad on many purposes spending government's funds ran away from the contingents and stayed in other countries.

Safeguard the reputation of the country and your dignity. This contingent consist of girls and boys of all ethnic groups in the country. This itself proves the prevailing peace of the country. Convey this message to Canadians and come home with collected knowledge to serve your nation. The motive of this youth exchange is to empower the youth with global knowledge which makes them easy to enter the global village with perfection.

The minister presented air tickets to the youths.
