Rewards for 34 brave policemen

Thirty-four police personnel attached to the Colombo Crime Division (CCD), Kohuwela Police Station and Beliatta Police Station received over Rs.1.5 million as rewards from the Police Department for arresting several suspects including underworld gang leaders and recovering weapons and ammunition from their possession.

IGP T.E. Anandarajah approved the monetary rewards to the police personnel on the recommendation of Senior DIG Gamini Randeni and Crimes, Criminal Intelligence and Organised Crimes DIG Sirisena Herath.

The IGP commended ASP Ravindra Karawita of the CCD and cash rewards were given to 13 other CCD police personnel for arresting an underworld gang with two .38 revolvers, three shot guns and cartridges and solving 10 murder cases and 14 robbery cases reported from the Southern Range.

The 13 policemen are SI Shantha Vithana, Sergeants A.M. Mettananda, L. Piyadharsana and D. Susantha, RPS Weliwatta, and PCs A. Jayatissa, L.H.M.J. Bandara, J. Bandaranayake, N.A. Ekanayake, Upul Kumara, J.P. Marasinghe, Deepthi Kumara and Silva. They received Rs. 310,000 in cash from the IGP.

The Beliatta Police team responsible for thwarting a robbery at the Rural Bank at Getamanna in Beliatta on April 15, 2003 killing one suspect and recovering a T-56 weapon, one locally made pistol, two hand grenades, one 12 bore cartridge, one magazine with 15 empty ammunition and a motor cycle included Inspector P. Wettasinghe, SI Cyril Ranaweera, Police Sergeants Chandradasa, Ariyaratne and Rajapaksa and PCs Kodituwakku, Piyadasa and RPC Ranjith. They received Rs. 250,000.

Two police teams comprising 12 policemen attached to the Kohuwela Police Station received cash rewards of Rs. 975,000 for arresting suspect Gamini Wijeratne alias Alawwa Gamini on September 4, 2002 and recovering 12 stolen vehicles valued at Rs. 8,742,000 and arresting suspect R. Hewage on April 1, 2002 and solving 41 C-3 crime cases and recovering property valued at Rs. 978,000.

The two police teams comprised Inspector B.S. Thissera, SIs Prasanna de Silva and Samaraweera, RSI Suresh Silva, Sergeant Ananda, Constables Herath, Gunaratne, Wijeratne, Dissanayake, Dharmasena and Somaratne and RPC Saman.
