Footwear shop caught selling butterflies by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Wildlife officials have busted a racket selling preserved butterflies including some endemic species. The racket came to light when a flying squad raided a shop in a shopping complex. They found sets of preserved butterflies for sale at the shop. "These well preserved butterflies had been framed and were on sale for Rs 800 per set," an official told the Daily News yesterday. Officials have recovered 16 preserved butterflies at this shop which sells ladies shoes. The raid was conducted following a tip-off. The official said it was prohibited to keep or sell butterflies under the Fauna and Flora Act. "The butterflies will be sent to the Director of Zoological Gardens for further investigations and to ascertain whether they were local or foreign butterflies," the official added. Sri Lanka has 240 butterfly species of which 57 are endemic. W.A.D.U. Indrajith led the raid with the Cinnamon Gardens Police. |
