by Sandasen Marasinghe The CIC Paints has launched a Trust Fund aimed at protecting children from child abuse. The CIC Child Protection Trust Fund was declared opened with an initial contribution of Rs. 500,000 from CIC Paints (Pvt) Ltd. The deed setting up this Trust Fund was also signed at a ceremony at CIC building in Slave Island. On the occasion of the launch of the Trust Fund Managing Director, CIC Paints (Pvt) Ltd, Gerald de Saram said that his attention was drawn to the problem of the physical abuse of children in Sri Lanka in 2000 when he happened to meet Pieter Ter Haar who ran a home for abused girls in a remote village off Teldeniya. Since then CIC paints decided to extend its support to make a safer world for the Sri Lankan Children. CIC paints is also supporting the Jeevana Kanda Lama Nivasaya, run by the Pieter and Luise Ter Harr, a South African couple who have surrendered a comfortable lifestyle to provide shelter and nurturing environment for the abused girls apart from the numerous awareness campaigns to educate the society of the Sri Lanka's child abuse problem and campaigns to raise the funds for the benefit of children. The Managing Director observed that their resources and competence do not extend to fighting child abuse directly. But they can support the organisations that lead this fight or support the victims of abuse financially. In addition they are able to assist in making the issue as widely known as possible so that public attention is brought to bear on it and the collective conscience of our society would be aroused against this scourge and make the mothers aware of the risks and dangers their children face when they are not there to care for them. Chairman, Chemical Industries, Colombo B.R.L. Fernando spoke on social responsibility. |
