Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris noted that the uninterrupted ceasefire between the Government and the LTTE now in its 19th month had enabled the Government to conserve substantial resources which are now being used for development of infrastructure such as less rural electrification and improvement of roads. He told the weekly Cabinet briefing that the Government has decided to spend Rs. 10,400 million within a period of 290 days for an accelerated rural electrification programme. This means that a number of families enjoying electricity will go up from 63% to 72%. The Government has also decided to spend Rs. 200 million every month on improvement of the road system in the country. Minister Prof.Peiris said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has established a special mechanism to supervise the utilisation of these resources to make certain that time targets are achieved. |
