Trincomalee correspondent The Trincomalee Police yesterday arrested 21 would be local illegal immigrants from Mudcove Jetty in Trincomalee when they were awaiting to board on a Italy bound fishing trawler, Police said yesterday. The 21 locals have been identified as residents from Negombo, Wattala and Ja-Ela areas, Police added.This is the first time a group of illegal immigrants arrested in Trincomalee. According to Police investigations the owner of the fishing trawler, also a resident from Wattala has ran away to evade the Police arrest. Trincomalee HQI Nissanka Dassanayake told the Daily News yesterday that these would be illegal immigrants had each paid Rs. 150,000 as a down payment to the missing trawler-owner. They were due to leave for Italy in this 70 feet long fishing trawler which had been taken in to custody by the Police. The 21 people were due to produce before Trincomalee Magistrate last afternoon. |
