Government hopes to announce "Printing Charter" shortly -Minister of Mass Communication

"The biggest role in the country's printing industry today is played by the Private sector printing establishments. While providing more opportunities for them to improve their skills it's the objective of the government to create a just and fair competition between printers of the state and private sectors.

The government hopes to announce a "printing charter" shortly which would facilitate the development of the local printing industry to cater to the international market.

The private sector printing industry will have a bigger role to play in ensuring its successful implementation," said Minister of Mass Communication, Imthiaz Bakeer Markar at the inauguration of the 3rd South Asia Print Congress and Exhibition at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Exhibition Centre of BMICH yesterday.

More that 100 international companies and agencies participated at this exhibition and nearly 150 exhibition stalls were accommodated by the local and foreign printing companies in 3rd South Asia Print Exhibition.

Minister Imthiaz Bakeer Markar said "Printing has come to the forefront among various industries that are subjected to rapid development in the international arena. In all activities, whatever they are, the skills and techniques of the printing trade take pride of place. Vast changes have taken place in the trade globally during the past few years.

"Under the circumstances, we could well assess the progress the local printing trade has made, and the development goals to be achieved. This Congress of the Printers of the South Asia region and the exhibition which demonstrates the printing skills and capabilities of the local trade would certainly, be a positive factor for the development of the printing industry in Sri Lanka.

Further, this Congress and the exhibition will open new avenues to the local printers who are at the helm of the trade, to enter the international market, he said.

The Minister said the present government has taken a number of steps to facilitate the development of the Printing industry during the past one and a half years.

Basically we have tried to bring about an attitudinal change on the part of the state regarding the printing industry.

"It is heartening to note that an important print congress and exhibition of this nature is being held in Sri Lanka at a time when fundamental changes in the printing industry are taking place in the country.

I thank the organisers of this event for providing this vital opportunity for local printing industrialists and others interested in the printing industry".

"This exhibition will be held until August 17 and will showcase what the printing industry has to offer including offset machinery, flexo-screen, digital printing, pre-press, selection-scanners, plate makers, digital cameras, computers and software and post-press equipment such as lamination, binding and cutting machinery",he said.

With the above exhibition, the South Asia Print Congress will be held at BMICH which was inaugurated by the Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya, August 14. More than 200 foreign delegates participated at this congress and 15 reputed speakers from countries such the Netherlands.

South Africa, Japan and India will make the presentation at this congress. Kriss Sykers, Chairman of the World Print Congress and the delegates from India, Pakistan and other South Asian countries participated at this exhibition and the Print Congress.

The Sri Lanka Association of Printers said that this will provide gateway to establish Sri Lanka as a regional hub for printing and it will be a good exposure for Sri Lankan printers as they will get the opportunity to see new machinery and new technologies in printing.
