Wesley to felicitate cricketer Maharoof and rugby team by Chris Dhambarage Schoolboy Cricketer of the year Wesleyite Farveez Maharoof and the Wesley College first fifteen rugby team will be felicitated at a ceremony to be held on August 16 at the Old Wesleyite Sports Club, Campbell Park. Maharoof will captain the Sri Lanka under 19 team against the touring Pakistan under 19 team and was also selected to represent the Sri Lanka 'A' team in the forthcoming triangular series against India 'A' and Pakistan 'A' teams. All rounder Maharoof became only the second Wesleyite to be crowned as the schoolboy cricketer of the year after Darrel May had first won it way back in 1963. In addition he also completed a successful season with the Stanmore Cricket Club in the Middlesex County for a period of six months. Maharoof captained Wesley College in all age groups and was coached by Russel Hamer from 1995 to 1999. At the age of 14 he was introduced into the first eleven team at the request of the senior coach Bandula Warnapura under whose guidance Maharoof played first XI cricket from 1998 to 2000. In the last two years he was coached by Neil Rajapaksa. Among his outstanding contributions this year was a career best 243 not out against Richmond College at the Galle Stadium which is incidentally the highest ever individual score by a Weslseyite. He also scored 163 against Prince of Wales College Moratuwa, 144 against St. Joseph's College, 146 against Ananda and captured seven wickets for 16 runs against St. Benedict's College which are all best ever performances by a Wesleyite. The Wesley College first fifteen rugby team will also be felicitated at this occasion for their excellent performances in the Milo Schools 'A' division league rugby tournament. They emerged runners up in the league while recording six good victories against Nalanda, Dharmaraja, St. Anthony's, Vidyartha, Kingswood and St. Peter's. In addition they registered their first ever win over Trinity College Kandy in a first fifteen rugby match since both schools first met in 1956. The side captained by Kasun de Silva also reached the semifinals of the Milo Schools President's trophy knock out tournament before losing to S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia by a solitary 12-13 points. |
