Third tri-nation women's cricket in Sri Lanka Netherlands, Sunday, Sri Lanka will experience a new and enhanced image in women's cricket when for the first time the country will see three great cricketing countries exhibit their prowess in women's cricket. The Tri-Nation series among Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan will be played in April or July next year as the three countries have confirmed. The tri-nation series will be played in accordance to what men play for the Asia Cup while the Sri Lanka chapter in the series will be played for the Singer Trophy who are the official sponsors of women's cricket in Sri Lanka. The series will rotate among the three countries and played annually. Sri Lanka's delegate, Gwen Herat, President of the Women's Cricket Association of Sri Lanka at the ICC/IWCC Merger Conference in Amsterdam proposed the idea and managed to clinch the first series while India will host it in 2005 and Pakistan in 2006. Speaking to reporters Herat expressed her confidence that this tournament will strengthen women's cricket in the Asian region where it is weak while the powerful countries have made a head start. This will also be an incentive for Bangladesh to join the IWCC, Herat pointed out. With ICC managing and funding women's cricket completely by 2005 the game will become competitive. Herat also grabbed an Australian series in Sri Lanka for early next year as England who was to come, pulled out to host South Africa in England currently played in London. With renewed interest in women's cricket Japan played for the first time in the IWCC Championship Trophy for the qualifying rounds prelude to World Cup 2005 to be played in South Africa. IWCC also had a surprise new member in Argentina who participated as an official member. In all fifteen countries were in attendance and for the Asia region. Herat was a valuable participant whose proposals generated much interest among the countries towards this historic merger. The IWCC will meet again in South Africa to implement the merger. From Netherlands, Herat will proceed to London in time to watch the women's series between England and South Africa before returning to the island. |
