Govt has paved way for lasting peace - Minister Wijesekera

by Indhika Polkotuwa

Because President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and her Government failed to come any closer to peace and end the war which had dragged on for over two decades, a few others and myself including Professor G.L. Peiris had to leave the then Government and help the formation of a new Government, observed Fishery and Ocean Resources Minister Mahinda Wijesekera, when he addressed the 7th day exhibition of the Techno Lanka Science and Technology Exhibition at the Getambe Stadium, last Friday. The Exhibition is the brainchild of Kandy District MP Keheliya Rambukwella, the Minister of Science and Technology.

"I am sincerely happy about the decision that I took that day. Within the last 1 1/2 years Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's peace process has brought about a peaceful atmosphere in the country. In the past the war went to the extent of attacks on the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy, Anuradhapura Jayasrimahabodhi and the Katunayake Airport. What we are experiencing at the moment is a truce, which is a temporary cessation of hostilities. The Government has now paved the way for a lasting peace which is our target, stated Minister Wijesekera.

He said that when the Executive and the legislature march in two opposite directions no problem could be ever solved and that therefore as the head of the legislature, our leader is ever prepared to act in harmony with the executive to solve this problem.

Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that though we claim to have a rate of literacy as much as 90 per cent, we are backward in the knowledge of computer technology with only 1.5 per cent involved in that field. Our aim is to raise this level to 30 per cent. Former MP Sarath Kongahage and Central Provincial Council Member Jayaweera Bandara were present on the occasion.
