The National Education Commission announces with deep sorrow the demise of Professor K. D. Arulpragasam, Vice Chairman (Planning) of the National Education Commission on August 7, states an announcement made by Professor R. P. Gunawardane, Chairman, National Education Commission. Professor Arulpragasam first joined the University of Colombo as a member of the Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science and became Professor of Zoology in 1973. He also functioned as Dean, Faculty of Science of the University of Colombo. He was appointed as the First Vice Chancellor of the Eastern University of Sri Lanka in 1986. The other distinguished positions held by him were Chairman, Central Environmental Authority, Member of the Governing Council of the National Aquatic Research and Resources Development Authority (NARA), First Associate Director of the Institute of Fundamental Studies, Advisor to the Ministry of Fisheries, Member of the Experts Committees of the Ministry for Environment on 'Climate Change' and 'Biodiversity' and represented Sri Lanka at the UN on the final deliberations on the Convention on "Climate Change', the accouncement states. In addition to his position as the Vice Chairman (Planning), National Education Commission he also functioned as a member of the University Grants Commission, it adds. He was an able and dynamic person who contributed immensely in implementing Reforms in Education. His sudden death is certainly a great loss to the National Education Commission and the country, the statement concludes. |
