The Distant Education Service has launched a programme to hold seminars for GCE O/L students, free of charge, in extremely difficult areas, in collaboration with the Department of Education. The first series of these seminars will be held in the North Central Province at Kebitigollewa and Galenbindunuwewa on September 1 and 2. In these two centres we cover Padaviya, Horowpathana and Medawachchiya areas.. A team of lecturers from the Kelaniya University have volunteered to address these seminars. Our main idea is to uplift the standards of GCE O/L students of extremely difficult villages where no facilities are available to enhance their knowledge of English language, Sinhala language and Literature, Mathematics and other vital subjects, states a press release by the Director of the Distant Education Service - A. B. C. de Silva. The Distant Education Service will bear the necessary expenses in implementing this programme of work. We are specially thankful to Prof. Sunanda Mahendra and Prof. Somaratne Balasuriya of the Kelaniya University for their dedication in fulfilling the aims of this great service to poor students, in extremely difficult areas in the island. Also, we are thankful to George E Perera, former Director of English of NAITA and the editor and conductor of 'Enjoy English' Programme of the Rupavahini, for joining us in this great venture.
