S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South Group Correspondent Health authorities of the kandy Municipal Council in a joint effort with the Ministry of Health of the Central Province raided hotels, vendors and others who sold food items under unhygienic conditions or which was unfit for human consumption in kandy during the Esala perahera season and confiscated and destroyed such items. The value of these items amounted to over Rs. 100,000. These raids were carried out by the Chief Medical Officer of the Kandy Municipal Council Dr. (Mrs.) Sujatha Ekanayake and assisted by the Chief Public Health Inspector L. P. Sarath Gamini and Food Inspector Heennilame Dissanayake of the Kandy Municipal Council. The confiscated goods include short eats, sweet meats, spoilt fish curry, ice cream, 26 killogrammes of beef, 40 killogrammes of fish and 10 killogrammes of chicken which were uncooked but in a spoilt condition. The short eats and sweet meets were confiscated as they were not properly stored and were exposed to dust and other hazards. The Health Officers also visited the 23 schools within the Kandy Municipal limits where the policemen from other areas on special perahera duty were housed and checked their sanitary conditions and took remedial action. They also ensured that the officers were provided with proper sanitary facilities and water to keep the place clean. These checks are carried out regularly as those schools were primarily not meant for residential purposes and accommodating large numbers of persons could pose a health hazard, if preventive measures were not taken. |
