A veteran journalist and former Editor of the Thinakaran Ratnadurai Sivagurunathan passed away on Saturday at the age 71, after a brief illness. Born in Kantharamadam in Jaffna, he received his early education at St. John's College, Jaffna and at the Jaffna Hindu college. He joined Zahira College, Colombo to pursue higher education from where he entered Peradeniya University. After obtaining his degree, he entered law college and passed out as an Advocate. Later Siva joined Lake House as a journalist in the Thinakaran Editorial in 1955. He worked as a reporter, sub-editor and later as a lobby correspondent. He was appointed News Editor in 1958 and rose to the position of Editor in 1961. During his journalistic career, he obtained an MA degree from the University of Jaffna. He was a member of the Press Council and visiting lecturer at the Law College on legal history, legal systems and Muslim Law. He was also a visiting lecturer in journalism at the Colombo University. He was a former President of the Sri Lanka Working Journalists' Association and President of the Colombo Tamil Sangam. |
