Colombo, (Lankapuvath) Modern agro technology is to be introduced to rural areas through an innovative programme devised by the Ministry of rural Economy. The main aim of this programme is to improve rural productivity. The Ministry will set up food technology training and research centres in rural areas to achieve this objective. The first research centre will be set up at Venivelkola school in the Diyagama area. The Department of Botany of the University of Colombo will conduct the training programme for the introduction of modern agro-technology on tissue cultured Banana cultivation and processed products by using fruits under food technology programes. This institute will also provide facilities for other Universities in Sri Lanka to carry out activities of a research level and conduct specific courses. The necessary advice and technology can be obtained at this centre for the cultivation of vegetables and fruits more successfully and action will be taken to introduce these as value-added products by this training. Arrangements will be made to conduct specialist research on the processing of agricultural products according to the requirements of international markets, and this activity is expected to expand the portion of the foreign market for rural products in Sri Lanka. |
