by Sandasen Marasinghe A youth was electrocuted in the lift of the Phoenix Flats in Messenger Street, Colombo 12, on Saturday. He was pronounced dead on admission to the Colombo National Hospital. The incident occurred around 9.45 p.m. The 22-year-old victim was following a computer course with the intention to go to Canada. He had lived in a rented apartment of the flat and on the day in question he had used the lift of the flat. Later the relatives had been informed by a security officer that the victim had fallen inside the lift. The relatives had rushed the victim to hospital where he was found dead. This was revealed at the inquest held into the death of Rajasekaran Senduran held before the City Coroner Edward Ahangama. AJMO Dr Mrs D. I. L. Ratnayake who held the postmortem noted that the death was due to electrocution. S. M. Singhrayar Lalitha (45) said in evidence that she had been living for three years in an apartment on the fourth floor of the Phoenix flats and the victim had rented a part of their apartment. He had been electrocuted but did not know how it happened. The security officer informed them that he had fallen. Ponnambalam Subashini (31) testifying at the inquest said that the deceased was her mother's sister's son. He was studying to go abroad. The City Coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death due to electrocution. He further instructed the Kotahena Police to inform about the incident to the Ministry of Power and Energy. |
