Sarath Malalasekara reporting from Jaffna Religious dignitaries and senior citizens of the Jaffna peninsula appealed to Interior and Christian Affairs Minister John Amaratunga yesterday to continue with the MOU and give them everlasting peace. The Minister on his first visit to the North since assuming office as the Minister of Christian Affairs was given a rousing welcome by the people of Jaffna. Minister Amaratunga who is on a goodwill visit to Jaffna was accompanied by Hindu Cultural Affairs Minister T. Maheswaran, Jaffna Government Agent C. Padmanadan, IGP, T. E. Anandarajah, Secretary to the Ministry, M. N. Junaid, John Earl and Dinesh Weerakkody from the Prime Minister's office and several other senior officials. The school band of St. James College and a dancing troupe greeted the Minister on arrival. "The Ranil Wickremesinghe government is committed to reconstruct the damaged houses in the North and East and allow displaced people to live in harmony. The Government is also willing to assist the religious places in the Jaffna peninsula which have been destroyed during the last 15 years of war", the Minister said during his goodwill visit. The Minister also visited several places destroyed by the war, the CEYNOR project, the Jaffna police station, the St. James College and St. Patrick's College in Jaffna. During his meeting with Jaffna Bishop Right Rev. Dr. Thomas Saundranayagam the latter requested the Minister to help rebuild the St. James church which was bombed on November 13, 1993. The Minister also made a cash donation for the reconstruction of the church and pledged to support the task in the future. Security arrangements had been made by Jaffna DIG, Edward Witharana, Senior SP, Harold Anthony and assisted by Jaffna SP, Hector Dharmasiri. |
